A journey to West Africa must include animal life.

The Gambia offers a lot for nature and animal lovers, and it is a heaven for bird watchers as over 560 bird species have been recorder in the country. Wildlife of the Gambia is dictated by several habitat zones over its total land area of about 10,000 km2.

Senegal also provides an excellent representation of many of West Africa’s native ecological communities. The country stretches from semiarid Sahel savanna in the north to tropical forest in the south, and from wooded hills in the southeast to mangrove-lined estuaries on the Atlantic coast.

The closest wildlife reserve in Senegal is Fathala, located near Karang. Its just a short journey from the boarded between Gambia and Senegal. Due its location it is accessible for all visitors of The Gambia that want to enjoy some days in wildlife reserve.

Visiting Senegal became easier as the Senegalese government abolished visa fees for individuals from almost all countries of the world. This new development commenced from 1st May, 2015.

FATHALA WILDLIFE RESERVE

Fathala Wildlife Reserve is located near Karang in Senegal, just a short journey from the boarded between Gambia and Senegal. Due its location it is accessible for all visitors of The Gambia that want to enjoy some days in wildlife reserve.

The reserve is an area that consists of approximately 6000 hectares of original and protected forest, providing guests with the opportunity to visit an original stretch of the African wilderness in it’s original condition.

Animals that you can expect to see at Fathala Reserve includes the following lion, white rhino, zebras, giraffe, buffalo, waterbuck, roan, lord derby eland, warthog, bushbuck, monkeys, crocodiles numerous bird, and reptile species.

ACCOMMODATION

A visit to the Fathala Lodge offers you the chance of a romantic getaway in a luxurious tent in the shadows of the majestic African Mahogany trees. Relaxing on the porch of your tent and listening the chatter of parrots, parakeets and horn bill in the distance, while Red Colobus Monkeys jump playful from branch to branch is just one of many amazing things you will experience in wildlife reserve.

20 luxury tented and air-conditioned suites are decorated in a romantic African colonial theme with mosquito nets. The en-suite facilities are equipped with twin basins, deep free-standing baths and open-air showers. The suites are equipped with electronic safe, hairdryer, coffee/tea facilities and guest amenities.

Mahagony Restaurant

Overnight guests can relax in our open air Mahogany Restaurant – named after these majestic African trees. Guests can enjoy viewing the waterhole and Senegalese bush while savouring a delicious variety of local cuisine. Our Senegalese chef will delight you with delicious breakfasts and dinners and a light lunch menu is also on offer. Healthy breakfasts with lots of seasonal fruit and local breads are served buffet style, while seafood and other dishes galore will tempt your taste buds in the evenings. Enjoy a light lunch while lounging next to the pool, sipping on ice cold cocktails from the Baobab Bar.

Day Visitor’s Cafeteria

Enjoy an ice cold cool drink, hot coffee, or delicious pizza prepared on awood fired oven at our open air Day Centre before or after your game drive. Accommodation Guided Game Drive

During your stay at Fathala enjoy a typical African bush experience in an open game viewing vehicle on a guided sunrise or sunset game drive through the reserve. See family herds of the rare West African Giant Derby Eland – only found in this part of the world and visit the breeding camp.  Other antelope species such as roan, waterbuck and bushbuck can also be viewed, as well as  giraffes, rhino, buffalo, warthog, red colobus, green vervet and red patas monkeys as well as exquisitely coloured bird species amongst the giant African mahogany trees. Enjoy morning coffee or evening sundowners and snacks next to the waterhole as you experience a magnificent African sunrise or sunset. Binoculars are advised as animals and bird sightings are not always close by.

Lion Walks: Free Walking, No Leashes! No Collars

Lion Walk Senegal

 

Fishing in the Mangroves (strictly catch and release)

Enjoy a true Senegalese experience in the Mangroves – embark on a pirogue trip to fish in the tropical waters with a guide from a local village. A 4×4 transfer will transfer you to the shores of Bagadachii, where you will board a pirogue for a slow cruise through the Mangroves. Catch and Release only – test your skills on barracuda, captain fish, red snapper and more. Enjoy a packed picnic lunch on the water before your return trip to the lodge.

Mangroves Sundowner boat trip

Relax in a pirogue on the water in the cool of the evening, and watch a breath-taking sunset over the Mangroves while sipping on delicious Senegalese sundowners. Experience the Mangroves, birds and Boababs and if lucky see the Manatee (sea cow) and Dolphins.

Full day Island trip and Village Tour

Visit Fathala’s very own island and en-route take the unique opportunity to visit a Senegalese Fishing Village. A 4×4 transfer will transport you to the shores of Bagadachii where you will board a pirogue and take a slow cruise through the Mangroves to Djinack Barra. Visit the school and hospital, meet the village chief and learn about the local culture. Back to the pirogue and on to Leba Island for a “back to nature” tropical experience in the Sun. A delicious traditionally prepared fish barbeque, long walks on the beach and swimming in the warm waters, before your relaxing pirogue ride and transfer back to the lodge before dinner.

Village & Local Market Tour

An opportunity to move away from the typical tourist activities – visit a traditional Senegalese village and market and experience how the locals live and shop.  A local guide will accompany you to view the local crafts and fabrics, visit a bakery which makes the delicious Senegalese breads and taste the traditional baobab and bisap juice in a local restaurant and experience the REAL Africa.

Bush Walking and Birding Safari

View the smaller animals while walking and exploring the Fathala bush on foot. A knowledgeable guide will take you on a tour where you can learn more about the plants, insects and smaller animal life on the reserve. See and photograph the exquisitely coloured exotic birds, such as the Abyssinian roller, the rose ringed parakeet, the western red billed hornbill, the long tailed glossy starling and many more.
